Although the island makes more reds than whites, its white wines are extraordinary, especially the ones made from Vermentino 28% of the island’s vineyards are planted with the grape, and for a good reason, the wine’s good!
Vermentino di Gallura is what you’re looking for, the highest quality white wines of Sardinia. The grapes come from the northern part of the island, from almost 3,000 acres of vines that ripen the grapes beautifully every year.
Remember this one: Cannonau. The name might be unfamiliar, but it’s just the Sardinian name for Grenache, the thin-skinned red grape of grippy acidity and soft medium tannins that make the base of some of the best Italian, French and Spanish wines. The name you’re looking for is Cannonau di Sardegna, so keep an eye for it — Quartomoro is a standout family winery on the island.
There are a few Cariñena and Cabernet Sauvignon wines too, and they make good-quality wines. Blends are uncommon but exist and round up the diverse red wine category of the island.
Straw yellow with greenish reflections in the glass. It expresses a delicate floral and herbaceous tones with slightly mineral hints. On the palate, it relaxes with a full, fresh and juicy sip. Closes on notes of bitter almond.
The wine is super clean, full of fruit and with layers of complexity that add spice and earth; granite gives personality to the Cannonau and the altitudes give the fresh-acidic vein that allows longevity.
A brilliant ruby red with purple reflections. "Saragat" Monica has intense notes of marasca cherry and plum with a hint of spice on the palate, which shows great balance that is underpinned by a remarkable depth and silky tannins.
A deep, rich red colour, this Cannonau shows lashings of mature red fruits combined with delicate hints of spice on the nose. The dry and pleasantly flavoured palate is elegant, yet full bodied in style.
Aromatic notes of citrus and tropical fruit lead to a vibrant and beautifully fresh palate of green fruits and lime with a pleasing note of bitter almond on the finish.
A full flavoured wine, offering elegant aromas of ripe tropical fruits, citrus zest and subtle herbal nuances. Dry, with a full texture on the palate through to an enticing hint of almond on the finish.
Bright straw yellow with greenish reflections, "Saragat" Vermentino has fragrant aromas of rosemary, elderberry, juicy white stone fruit, and lychee. The palate is elegant and savoury, with great structure and balance. The intensity of flavour carries through onto the long finish.
