Brunello di Montalcino DOCG Riserva Late Release 1983 – Biondi-Santi

Full Body Red

This is a cerebral and emotionally stirring wine that brings us back to a very different, more innocent time in the quickly evolving timeline of this mighty wine appellation in southern Tuscany. The 1983 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is a brilliant but naked wine that reminds us of the original blueprint for Brunello, a wine made with a specific clone of Sangiovese that was selected for its long ageing potential. Despite all that time in the bottle, this wine presents stunning purity and clarity of fruit. It is polished and glossy in the mouth with tannins that have been softened by time. A bright moment of acidic freshness remind us that this wine is still very much alive.

About this wine

This Brunello di Montalcino DOCG Riserva Late Release Biondi-Santi was aged in Slavonian oak barrels for 3 years. It benefited from a long refinement in the bottle in the quiet and darkness of “La Storica”, the bottle library at Tenuta Greppo where all the historic vintages of Biondi-Santi Riserva are scrupulously kept. The 1983 Riserva was produced with our proprietary clone of Sangiovese Grosso called BBS11 (Brunello Biondi Santi 11), which was identified and selected by Biondi-Santi at Tenuta Greppo in the Seventies. For this Riserva we exclusively used grapes from the oldest vines with over 25 years of age. Produced for the first time in 1888, the Biondi-Santi Riserva was the first Brunello di Montalcino in history, and even today it is an extraordinary event when a new vintage of Riserva is announced at Tenuta Greppo, the Biondi-Santi main estate. Renowned for its extraordinary longevity, this rare wine has been released only 40 times from 1888 till today and each production is extremely limited. Riserva is traditionally produced with grapes coming from only the ùoldest vineyards, of more than 25 years of age. At the centre of the cellar at Tenuta Greppo there is a dark room, hidden away from the world, dedicated specifically to Riserva. It is “La Storica”, the estate wine library where Biondi-Santi carefully refines the bottles of each Riserva vintage ever produced. If a Riserva has been topped up and re-corked in the past, a special topping-up certificate will be placed around its neck, certifying when this delicate reconditioning has taken place.
The Biondi Santi winery, firmly guided for decades by Franco Biondi Santi, has become a symbol of Montalcino, and today, under the guidance of his son Jacopo, it represents the undisputed reference point for all Brunello enthusiasts. A centuries-old history, made up of passion, competence and love for the territory, which began in the mid-19th century thanks to the work and passion of Clemente Santi, a man of letters and great landowner: in fact, he owns the Tenuta Il Greppo. Biondi Santi wines obtained their first important acknowledgments at the Universal Exposition in Paris in 1867, establishing themselves on the international wine scene for their multifaceted elegance. However, it was the historic vintage of 1888 that produced what we know today as Brunello di Montalcino. Many years have passed since then and the winery, always led by the Biondi Santi family, has been the subject of growing success, becoming a great name for Brunello di Montalcino. The fulcrum of the Biondi Santi winery coincides with the historic Tenuta Il Greppo: a total of 43 hectares of which 25 are populated by Sangiovese vineyards, where there are very old plants dating back even to 1930: the Greppo vineyard is in fact used for the splendid Reserve. We are located at an altitude between 350 and 570 meters, in ideal conditions for the production of Brunello. Long aging in barrels and extraordinary gustatory freshness are the cornerstones of the tradition of the family, symbol of Brunello. In fact, here are born those great wines that have written (and continue to write) the wonderful wine history of Montalcino and the world.
