The grapes to produce the Brunello di Montalcino DOCG “Rio Cassero” Caparzo are sourced from Carpazo’s 2 Brunello estates, Caparzo and Il Cassero, offering a great classical expression of Brunello that’s fantastic value. Traditional fermentation is followed by 3 years aging in large format Slovanian oak and a further 1 year in bottle.
Established in 1970, Caparzo is one of Montalcino’s historic wineries, and is amongst those that contributed to the fame of Brunello di Montalcino. Purchased by the current owner Elisabetta Gnudi Angelini in 1998 after a period of dilapidation, she was determined to grow, improve, and develop the estate back to its former glory. Investment and modernisation of the vineyard, with the help of winemaker Massimo Bracalente, have all ensured that Caparzo is now enjoying a comeback as a top Brunello producer. The Caparzo estate covers 200 hectares, including 90 hectares of vineyards where 9 are designated for Brunello. The 9 hectares of Brunello are distributed throughout different hillsides in the DOCG, ranging from 220 to 300 metres above sea level. Owning vineyards in Caparzo, La Casa, La Caduta, Il Cassero, and San Piero Caselle, which constitute almost all of Montalcino’s best areas, is a defining feature of the Caparzo estate. This selection of the best vineyards, allows Caparzo to draw the best fruit from every vintage. Found in the north east of the Brunello zone on the hill of Montosoli and with the famous galestro soils, La Casa is often considered to be one of the most prestigious sites in the appellation. In 1977, Caparzo introduced the concept of Cru to Montalcino, vinifying the grapes from the La Casa vineyard separately, to showcase their high-quality and uniqueness.
Named after an antique farmhouse located on the wine estate, this smooth and elegant wine is a lovely expression of Chianti. With red cherry and cranberry fruits, the palate has good substance and a lingering, rounded finish.
An innovative baby Super-Tuscan, Dogajolo combines the power and deep flavours of a young wine, with the elegance and balance from the oak ageing. Full bodied, yet soft on the palate with fruity cherry notes interlaced with coffee, vanilla and spice, this is complex and well-developed.
Salcheto's Salco is brick red colour and shows delicious dried and ripe dark cherries on the nose, with a touch of prune and a ripe, sweet core. There is definite complexity with savoury aromas of earth, cedar, spices and a warming meatiness and leather. The palate mirrors this but shows great balances with the fruit, and the prunes and warm earth are particularly prominent. The ripe tannins provide great structure, but are softly textured and are in perfect balance with the bright acidity. The finish is lovely and long and leaves you gasping for another sip...
Intense straw yellow color. The nose offers a complex bouquet, characterized by floral, citrus, tropical and mineral notes. On the palate it has a good structure, it is fresh, mineral, with a savory and persistent finish.
A perfumed and elegant wine, showing aromas of dark cherry and violet complemented by a touch of cedar. Opulent, with elegant tannins enveloping the layers of fruit through to a smooth and velvety finish.
Ruby red tending to garnet. The fruity scents of marasca and currant harmonize with the nose along with spicy tones and vanilla nuances. The mouth is expressed in a distinct and elegant, resulting dominated by tannins still energetic, and slightly sapid and mineral in closing.
