To Produce the Gavi del Comune di Gavi DOCG “Marchese Raggio Old Année” La Lomellina the best grapes were manually harvested and collected in 20 kg perforated boxes. Soft pressing of the grapes and fermantation of the must in stainless steel tanks at low temperature (14-16°C) followed, until all the sugars were completely converted to alcohol. Malolactic fermentation avoided to retain primary fruit. Aged for 12 months in stainless steel on its lees, with frequent battonage. Fined for 36 months in barrel.
As it was recently declared by the Gavi Consortium and by many other international critics, the Cortese grape, and therefore Gavi, are excellent wines for developing in bottle for many years. At La Lomellina estate have known this well and promoted this production idea from the beginning.
The villa “La Lomellina” was built around 1620 by the influential Genoese Lomellini family, from which it took its name. In the course of almost four centuries of history, only three families have owned the estate, the last of which was that of Count Edilio Raggio, Marquis d’Azeglio, great-grandfather of the current co-owner. A very successful businessman, Count Raggio, gave the decisive impetus to the wine production of La Lomellina, started in the early 1800s, and in a short time his Gavi gained popularity and appreciation becoming more and more in demand in Italy and all ‘abroad. The Cortese grapes used to produce the Gavi del Comune di Gavi DOCG “Raggio” come exclusively from the La Lomellina estate in Gavi (AL), a place where viticulture boasts a long tradition. The land of the estate, rich in precious minerals, combined with the fresh brackish winds that blow from the sea, give the grapes an intense and unmistakable aromatic set of white flowers, lemon and green apple. All the operations in the vineyard are carried out strictly by hand: only the best grapes, coming from the most suitable terroirs of the estate where the vineyards were planted over 30 years ago, are chosen and reach the cellar to be transformed into wine. The company has a state-of-the-art cellar, in which there are steel vats equipped with a temperature control system, in order to enhance the aromas and structure of the wine. The result is an intensely fruity wine, with a very dry character, a fresh acidity and intriguing flavors of almond on the finish.
