The grapes to produce the “Altitude 1350” Doña Paula were gently destemmed without crushing. Each variety was vinified separately and underwent cold maceration in stainless steel tanks, to extract the primary aromas. Once fermentation was complete, the wines were blended. Maturation lasted for 16 months, in French oak barrels, of which 20% were new.
Doña Paula 1350 comes from two blocks (No.10 and No.7) in the Alluvia vineyard, which is located in Gualtallary, at 1,350 metres above sea level. The soil is sandy, with alluvial and calcareous stones; the calcium carbonate content ranges from medium to very high with caliche which is present in very old soils, where the vine vigour is reduced resulting in concentrated flavours in the grapes. The Uco Valley is renowned for its warm days and cool nights and has an average temperature variation of 12.5 °C. This encourages a long, slow ripening period where the grapes gradually produce rich fruit flavours, balanced by fresh acidity and pronounced aromatics. The blend comprises a small quantity of Casavecchia, an extremely rare red grape variety from Campania, Italy. Casavecchia has high levels of anthocyanins which impart its wines with deep colours and strong, supple tannins.
Doña Paula is a leading, modern winery at the forefront of exploring and investing in new, high quality wine regions in Argentina. Established in 1997, they own all of their vineyards covering 700 hectares. These vineyard sites are located in the best subregions within Mendoza including Ugarteche, Altamira, Gualtallary and Tupungato. The vineyards have always been cultivated using sustainable methods which helps to maximise the true expression of terroir, and in 2019 the winery was certified as a sustainably managed winery by Bodegas de Argentina. Continuous innovation in vineyard management ensures Doña Paula produces top quality wines from one year to the next.
