About this wine

The grapes to produce “Collezione Cinquanta” San Marzano were destemmed, crushed and underwent cold pre-fermentation maceration. Fermentation took place with indigenous yeasts before being gently pressed. Malolactic fermentation took place in stainless steel tanks which helped to soften the resulting wine, before “Collezione Cinquanta” San Marzano was aged for 12 months in fine French oak barrels. The vineyard is located in Salento, Puglia, where the vines are grown at an altitude of approximately 100 metres above sea level. The temperatures are relatively high over the summer, which encourages the berries to ripen evenly. The soil is predominantly clay with some rocks, which help drainage. The vines are old, gnarly bush vines which are over 50 years old and are planted at a density of 4,500 vines per hectare. The Primitivo is grown in the highly reputed area of Manduria, locally regarded as the best in Puglia. The harvest takes place in September, when the grapes are slightly overripe.
Cantine San Marzano was born in 1962, in a small town in Puglia in the center of the DOC Primitivo di Manduria, a strip of land kissed by the two seas of Salento, the Ionian and the Adriatic. 19 wine growers from San Marzano, whose families had cultivated the land for generations, joined forces to found the winery. Over the decades this cooperative has grown significantly, attracting over 1,200 winemakers. Using modern and technologically advanced winemaking techniques they produce elegant wines that pay homage to the ancient Apulian wine traditions. The fusion of tradition, passion and contemporary techniques has allowed this company to produce wines with distinctive varietal and regional characteristics, while reflecting the local territory. In the Sommelier Wine Awards, San Marzano was awarded as European producer of the year 2017.
