About this wine
The grapes to produce the Pinot Noir “Arenaria” Aconcagua Clos des Fous were hand harvested and transported to the winery. The wine was fermented slowly in large cement vats and was then aged for 18 months in new French oak. The wood for the barrels was sourced from the Vosges in Alsace and the barrels prepared at the winery.
Arenaria comes from vineyards in Pucalán, located eight kilometers from the sea in Aconcagua. Vines are planted on ancient palezoic soils made up of deposits of marine creatures that have become rock arenaria. The soil has low fertility with a clay surface. The Pucalán vineyard consists of four hectares planted with a density of 10,000 plants per hectare. Pucalán is one of the first 100% Chilean vineyards planted with clonal material from Burgundy (including clones from Vosne-Romanée and Gevréy Chambertin).
The name “Clos des Fous” is an ode to the 12 years that both Pedro and François spent studying and working in Burgundy, as well as to what their peers described as their ‘craziness’ in crossing the traditional Chilean vineyard boundaries to source grapes from those in the more extreme conditions further south and east. Pedro now makes wines under his own label but was originally one of the four ‘Fous’ alongside winemakers François Massoc and Paco Leyton, as well as Albert Cussen, who looks after the business.
